A Grand Celebration of Taste. POP!WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - (October 1, 2007) - As New England's premiere fine wine, spirits, beer and specialty food merchant, has completed its renovations and expansion, just in time for the upcoming holiday season. Located at 1119 Riverdale St, Rt. 5 in West Springfield, is at the crossroads of major New England highways.

Expansion of the former started in February of this year and included an expanded wine selection with a temperature controlled wine cellar in order that wine can mature quietly in an ideal ambient environment, a room for their finest gems known as the Cave, and a room for tastings and events, along with a temperature controlled wine storage area for customer purchases; all intended to store wine at its optimal temperature. In addition the entire store received new lighting and décor and cheese and gourmet food selections were enhanced significantly. The entire sales area was increased to also accommodate additional varieties of beer and liquor. Lastly, the name was changed in order to showcase the expanded focus of .

The construction brought in many local contractors and cost $2 million.

Now, the almost 35,000 square ft facility boasts over 4000 varieties of imported and domestic wines in stock at any time with bottles ranging in price from $3 to almost $9000 from vintages from 1865 to the present. There is a vast selection of 700 domestic, imported and microbrew beers from the smallest breweries located right here in the Pioneer Valley to all over the world including Australia, Europe, Canada, China, South America, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and the United States. Their selection of fine spirits is one of the largest in the country including over 2700 spirits from Cognacs, Armagnacs and single malt whiskies to the most sought after spirits, mixers and accessories. There is even a well-stocked humidor to satisfy any cigar aficionado.

Their 150 cheeses hail from a variety of cheese styles: hard vs. soft; fresh vs. aged; cow's vs. goat's vs. sheep's milk; European vs. domestic. And, along with scores of different crackers and local artisan breads, there are oils and vinegars, olives, sausages, pates, smoked salmon, specialty foods, desserts and of course, chocolates.

According to Don MacIver, director of operations, " Every department within our store has been expanded and moved in order to make the shopping experience a bit more unique and exciting for our customers. With our new amenities and over 10,000 wines, spirits, beers and specialty foods under one roof, is finally in a position to become one of New England's true destinations. And, that is something our entire staff is proud of."

, a wholly owned subsidiary of Big Y Foods, Inc. purchased the former in September 2002. The first opened in Northampton, MA in 1998. Originally opened there in 1962 as Big Y Liquor Supermarket, evolved into a destination for fine wines, spirits and specialty foods. In spring of 2007, moved south to fully incorporate into the West Springfield facility. The move was necessary due to renovations within their existing shopping center, thus paving the way for the complete transformation in the new location. In addition, many of the wine cellar masters and brew masters transferred to the West Springfield location bringing the total number of employees to almost 90.  

Local officials have been invited to a champagne toast to celebrate the transformations leading to the economic vitality of the area on Thursday, October 4 at 4PM.

In fact, the entire month of October will feature product tastings in Western Massachusetts' first
tasting room conveniently located right in the store. From beginner to expert, attendees can sit back and relax as the professional staff and special guests educate and guide them through a series of tastings, classes, and events. For example, French wine importer, Alain Blanchon and German and Austrian wine importer, Terry Theise will be hosting events in addition to other tastings such as from the Rosenthal Wine Merchant.  Other tasting events this month include California's Sierra Nevada award-winning beer, the Boston Beer Company/ Sam Adams Oktoberfest, the CEO and founder of Hammer + Sickle Vodka, the history of Glenlivet Scotch, as well as the Best of Brazil featuring U.S. authority, Olie Berlic.
